Animas Museum will host the next Second Saturday Seminar at 1 p.m. Saturday via Zoom.
Durango’s history as a Wild West frontier town is full of stories of cowboys, railroaders, outlaws and “soiled doves.” Bessie Rivers was a legendary madam. Hattie Mashburn was a businesswoman in an era when that was unusual. Stories from Rivers’ colorful life still resonate, while somehow Mashburn has also become known as a madam. Meet Rivers, the notorious owner of a “sporting house,” and upstanding businesswoman Mashburn in a presentation we call “Madame, not a Madam.”
