Community college hires EMS coordinator

Southwest Colorado Community College announces that it now has a full-time coordinator for its Emergency Medical Services program.

Troy Salazar has transferred to the local campus from Pueblo Community College’s main campus in Pueblo, where he has been a full-time EMS instructor since 2005. Salazar is a 1981 graduate of Farmington High School. He received his initial Emergency Medical Technician certification in Moab, Utah, in 1997.

He graduated from Pueblo Community College’s EMS program in 2000 with an associate’s degree. He earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational management in 2012 from Colorado Christian University.

Salazar will help other training agencies with EMS needs. He currently is working with Montezuma-Cortez High School teacher Lori Mott on the EMS/Fire Science program there, as well as with Silverton’s EMS program.

To help agencies dependent upon volunteer first responders, the college recently obtained its Training Center certification through the Colorado Division of Fire Safety and now is able to offer Emergency Medical Responder courses that result in state certification.

Salazar also will coordinate the Colorado Symposium on Emergency Care, to be held May 15-18 in Durango.

These EMS courses will be offered:

An EMT course designed for wildland firefighters will be offered at the Upper Pine Fire Department in Bayfield from November to February.

The Durango campus will offer an AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support course for initial or renewal certification Dec. 6 and 13.

The Mancos Campus will offer an AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support class for initial or renewal certification Nov. 8 and 9 as well as an eight-week Emergency Medical Responder course from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Monday.

For more information, call 247-2929, ext. 7206 or email Troy.Salazar@pueblocc.edu.
