Ignacio High School proved it had one of the best boys basketball teams in Colorado by finishing in third place at the state championships.
Now the Bobcats have proof they field some of the best players in the state, too.
Wyatt Hayes and Adison Jones were named to the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 2A All-State team, which was announced Thursday.
Jones, a junior, picked up a second-team nod after averaging 11.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game with eight double-doubles.
“Adison puts a lot of time in in the summer. He missed a lot of our team camps because he went to a lot of individual camps to get better individually,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said. “He’s a hard worker. He’s not a great leaper, but he has long arms and he understands positioning.”
He scored 14 points in the Bobcats’ 59-50 win against Lutheran in the third-place game to end the season.
Jones also was named to the all-state team for football at the quarterback position.
Hayes made the third team as a sophomore.
He averaged nine points per game and led the team with 4.4 rebounds and 4.1 steals per game with a 3.03 assist-to-turnover ratio.
His assist average ranked sixth in Class 2A while his steals total led the class.
“Wyatt has always been a kid that everyone believes is going to be a college athlete,” Valdez said. “He has that kind of ability ahead of him. His only issue right now is that he’s not physical enough to play this game at another level. That’s something kids have to dedicate themselves to.”
Hayes and Jones also were named to the Class 2A/1A San Juan Basin League all-conference second team.
Clayton Jefferson made the first-team while Kelton Richmond was an honorable mention.
Both Hayes and Jones will return next year and likely will start with Nick Herrera, Anthony Manzanares and Tucker Ward.
“It benefits our team greatly (to get them both back),” Valdez said. “We’re going to be as good as we were last year, but we won’t be as deep as we were last year unless we can get some kids in camp and develop them.”
