Mountain Middle opens enrollment registration
Mountain Middle School is holding registration for the 2014-15 school year through Feb. 14.

Enrollment is limited. If interest exceeds the number of seats available, a lottery drawing will be held Feb. 26.

Animas High School, on U.S. Highway 160 1.7 miles west of the DoubleTree Hotel, announces these programs:
Enrollment for the 2014-15 school year is open. Spots are available for ninth, 10th and 11th grades. An online enrollment form is available at www.animashighschool.com.
There are numerous opportunities for potential students and their families to learn more about the high school. In January, prospective students are invited to attend information nights from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the school on these dates: today, Jan. 22 and Jan. 29.

Instrument Discovery Day to be held Saturday
Music in the Mountains Goes to School will present Instrument Discovery Day from 9 a.m. to noon or from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in Jones Hall of Fort Lewis College.
The program will feature free mini-lessons on band instruments, orchestra instruments, voice, guitar and piano. Expert instruction will be provided and participants can try all the different instruments.

LPEA to host scholarship open house Jan. 23
To assist high school seniors and their parents with the application process for college scholarships available through La Plata Electric Association, the cooperative will host an open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at LPEA’s Bodo Industrial Park headquarters, 45 Stewart St.
LPEA staff members will be available to answer questions. Copies of all applications will be available, and no RSVP is necessary.
All high school seniors in LPEA’s service territory, including home-schooled students, who receive their electricity from LPEA are eligible to apply for the variety of funding opportunities.
The deadline for application is March 3. Attendance at the open house is not a requirement of application.

Columbine Christian to screen film today
Columbine Christian School, 1775 Florida Road, will host a screening of the “The Blueprint” about Adventist education at 5:30 p.m. today.
Made for public television by the director of “Bonhoeffer,” the film features interviews with local teachers and students, as well as stories about Adventist schools, across the U.S. Admission is free and light snacks will be served before the film begins at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
The school offers individualized, hands-on education for students in preschool through eighth grade.

Grace announces essay winner and honor roll
Grace Preparatory Academy freshmen Lauren Kelsey placed first in the local round of the Veterans of Foreign Wars “Voice of Democracy” essay competition.
Grace also announces the principal’s honor roll for the second term of the 2013-14 school year.
These students achieved a 3.85 GPA or higher: Clancy Collins, Hannah Greene, Lauren Kelsey, Dillon Flowers, Keely Savage and Paul Cross.
Methodist Thrift Shop offers scholarship fund
The Methodist Thrift Shop Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund for the purpose of helping people advance their education.
Applicants are considered on their church involvement, leadership, community service, extra-curricular activities and personal attributes.
Application are available at the Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., or at local high school counselors offices.
The application deadline is March 14.
Durango Education Center announces classes
The Durango Education Center, 701 Camino del Rio, announces that these classes will start Jan. 27:
Travel, beginning and conversational Spanish classes will run for six weeks Mondays and Wednesday from Jan. 27 to March 5.
Computing fundamentals, an introduction to computers, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 27 to Feb. 5.
Excel 1 will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 27 to Feb. 19.
An iPad introduction will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 31. People will learn the basics of how to use an iPad.

Alpine Bank is offering scholarships to seniors
Graduating high school seniors can apply for the J. Robert Young annually renewable scholarships.
Students meeting the criteria of the scholarship may receive an application through their counselor, at the websites www.wc-cf.org or www.alpinebank.com or by visiting any Alpine Bank location.
The scholarship is offered to graduates of public high schools in areas served by Alpine Bank.
The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need to a student with a GPA of 2.75 or higher who is seeking a business-related degree.
Students must attend a Colorado college. Two $1,000 renewable scholarships are awarded each year.
Applications must be postmarked or emailed to the Western Colorado Community Foundation on or before March 15.

Durango school board to meet Tuesday
The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Durango High School will be the school highlight.
Durango High School students host Wish Week
Students at Durango High School will host Wish Week through Friday.
Students will raise money to support a young boy, Brady, who has leukemia. His dream is to go to Disney World.
Students are collecting donations for Pie a Teacher. The largest donators will be able to throw pies at volunteer teachers during an assembly.
Money also will be raised in these ways:
Fake an Injury Dress Up Day and a dodgeball tournament will be held today.
Preppy Dress Up Day, the Winter Sports Assembly, Pie a Teacher and Miracle Minute will take place Thursday.
A raffle will be held Friday.
The Winter Formal will take place Saturday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.
Durango School District to host budget discussion
Durango School District Superintendent Dan Snowberger will host a round table to discuss the budget from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Escalante Middle School library.
During this session, participants can name programs they do not want supported and recommend how the school might reallocate the money to support programs people do want to see in the school.
Durango district to begin boys transitional program
Durango School District 9-R is working with the community to develop an eighth-grade boys transitional program, similar to the Girls to Women conference run by the Women’s Resource Center.
The goal of the conference for all transitioning eighth-grade boys is to support students in their efforts to build positive self-images and strong relationships to help them succeed in high school and beyond.
A committee is currently working on developing the program for the conference, which is scheduled for May 8.
The next committee meeting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 in the District Office Conference Room. Community members interested in hosting a workshop or volunteering are invited to attend.
Durango Swim Club has scholarship available
The Durango Swim Club has a scholarship fund available for children interested in joining the swim team.
The coach will determine if the child is able to safely complete practices, and the child must be committed to attending two practices a week.
A swimsuit and equipment will be provided to the participating child.

Escalante Middle School collecting donated books
Escalante Middle School will participate in a book drive with a goal of collecting more than 25,000 children’s books to be distributed to kids throughout Colorado.
The school will collect new or gently-used books, including Spanish-language books, through Jan. 31 in the front hall, where donations can be placed in the red box.
Books should be for children in the third grade or younger.
Florida Mesa to host Third-Grade Parent Night
Florida Mesa Elementary School will host its Third-Grade Parent Night on Thursday. Parents will have the choice of attending at 3 or 6 p.m.
Attendees will discuss expectations for third-graders and investigate math, reading and writing problems.
Participants are asked to bring a healthy snack to share.
Children will work in the computer lab while participants snack and chat.
Pagosa Springs woman named to dean’s list
Autumn Allison of Pagosa Springs qualified for the fall 2013 dean’s list at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.
Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.

Cortez man named to president’s list
Northeastern Junior College in Sterling has named Kyle Likes of Cortez to the president’s list for earning a 4.0 grade point average for the 2013 fall semester.
