Five left on Durango school district’s list for next superintendent

Board plans to name 2 or 3 finalists Monday
The Durango School District Board of Education expects to decide on its next superintendent March 11 and make the selection public March 26.

Five candidates remain in Durango School District 9-R’s search for a new superintendent.

The school board came up with five semifinalists, reducing the 10 candidates who made the first cut, in a closed session Thursday night.

The district had 26 original applicants.

The superintendent position became available in November, when Dan Snowberger announced he would leave the district in June.

The board’s goal Thursday was to cut its list from 10 to at least seven candidates for a resume committee made up of community members, parents, students, teachers, staff members and administrators to review and offer advice to board members.

The resume committee will meet Saturday.

On Monday, the school board plans to narrow the field further to two or three finalists, whose names will be made public.

The finalists will be invited to Durango for meetings, probably virtual meetings on Zoom, with the community on March 8-9.

The school board plans to select the next superintendent March 11 in a closed session and begin contract negotiations. On March 12, the board will notify the unchosen semifinalists of their choice.

State law requires the district to wait at least 14 days before making its choice of the next superintendent public. The district plans to make its choice public March 26.

The new superintendent is expected to start July 1.
