Two killed, two injured in crash on U.S. Highway 550

Cause of single-car rollover is under investigation

FARMINGTON – A crash Friday on U.S. Highway 550 in San Juan County killed two people and injured two others, according to New Mexico State Police.

The crash occurred about 10:30 p.m. near milepost 168, just north of Aztec, after a southbound 2003 Lincoln car left the road and rolled, state patrol spokesman Ray Wilson said Monday night.

The two passengers in the back seat were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. They were identified as Marcelino Marquez, 20, of San Juan County and Michael Tsosie, 52, of Arizona.

An earlier news release from the state patrol incorrectly reported the date of the crash and the age of Marquez, Wilson said.

State police said they believe alcohol played a role in the crash but the investigation was continuing. Investigators also suspected improper use of seat belts.

The driver and passenger in the front seat were taken to a hospital. Their conditions and names weren’t released.

Correction: Earlier versions of this article provided an incorrect date of the crash, the age of Marcelino Marquez and incorrectly said the two rear passengers were ejected from the car. New Mexico State Police have since corrected information it provided in a Dec. 16 news release.
