September is an exciting month: Students are filling the halls, the leaves are starting to turn and the cultural arts engine at Fort Lewis College is revving up for a semester full of music, theater and art offerings.
For art, internationally known fiber artist Pat Hickman’s “Here, Still” exhibit will run from Sept. 8 through Oct. 6, with an opening reception at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 11.
The music faculty get together every fall near the beginning of the semester to present a collage recital featuring solos, duets and small ensembles. You’ll hear a unique pairing in “Memories,” by Ney Rosauro and Katie Johnson, featuring Charissa Chiaravalloti, mezzo-soprano, and John O’Neal, vibraphone. Jeff Solon and Easton Stuard will perform original compositions. Mark Walters, baritone saxophone, accompanied by Lisa Campi Walters, will perform Eugene Bozza’s expressive “Aria.” Kerry Ginger, also accompanied by Walters, will perform “Invocation” from In Tomorrow’s Fields. There are too many items to list here, including an Irish tune and a woodwind trio, but suffice it to say that this afternoon should not be missed. Proceeds from this concert; $15 for adults and $5 for children, go toward music student scholarships. Come to Roshong Recital Hall at 3 p.m. Sept. 17 for a musical treat followed by a light reception and chat with our talented faculty.
Back by popular demand: Get the Led Out – The American Led Zeppelin hits the concert hall at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22. From the bombastic and epic, to the folksy and mystical, Get the Led Out has captured the essence of the recorded music of the renowned Led Zeppelin, bringing it to the concert stage.
The band’s accomplished musicians re-create Zeppelin’s songs in all their depth, including the studio overdubs that Zeppelin never performed live. The dance floor will be open.
Come to Roshong Recital Hall at 3 p.m. Sept. 24 for Modern Marvels, an exploration of some of the most exciting, diverse and accessible vocal music of the 20th century. Relax and be inspired by the sounds of Kerry Ginger, mezzo-soprano, and Erik Gustafson, tenor, as they perform Hungarian folk song settings by Bartók, “Three Love Poems” by Erik Satie, the touching “Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac” by Benjamin Britten and more.
Pay at the door; $15 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds benefit music scholarships.
Black Violin, featuring Wilner “Wil” Be Baptiste (viola) and Kevin “Kev” Marcus Sylvester (violin) will be at the concert hall at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27.
The duo is a blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B and bluegrass music, resulting in a unique, generation-defying, groundbreaking sound. Wil and Kev are joined by ace turntable whiz DJ SPS, plus percussion. The dance floor will be open.
