The city of Durango Sustainability Division is partnering with the Colorado State University Extension Office, The Good Food Collective, Bear Smart Durango, Pine River Shares and Table to Farm Compost to host the annual pumpkin drop-off on Sunday and Monday after Halloween.
Community members may drop off jack-o’-lanterns and other festive fruits from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday or 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the east-side dirt lot of La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., or Pine River Shares, 658 South East St., in Bayfield.
Residents may also drop off leaves at Pine River Shares for composting. Pumpkins and fruits must be free of candles, wax, paint and bleach, and leaves must be unsprayed.
Pumpkins and other fruit will be donated to local farmers and ranchers for use as animal feed. Rotting pumpkins left out on the porch act as a bear attractant. Pumpkins not intercepted by bears typically end up in landfills where they break down slowly, releasing greenhouse gas emissions.
This event relies on volunteers to assist with unloading and weighing pumpkins at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. To sign up for a two-hour shift, visit bit.ly/2Tah7RV.
