Cause of crash under investigation
A 62-year-old Durango man died Friday night in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango.
Richard Hopkins was driving northbound at 8:58 p.m. when his 2001 Ford Escape crossed through the southbound lane and went off the west side of the road near mile marker 27 before colliding with rock and trees, said Capt. Adrian Driscoll with the Colorado State Patrol.
Hopkins was pronounced dead on scene.
Driscoll said alcohol and speed are not suspected as factors in the crash and the cause is being investigated. Hopkins was not wearing a seat belt, he said.
