Big changes for Tile & Carpet Store

The Tile & Carpet Store of Durango has gone through some changes recently.

After 20 years of business in Durango on Bodo Drive, the store is under new ownership and changed locations. Dennis Cavanaugh, a La Plata County resident of 13 years, bought the store last summer, found a new location and had it remodeled over the winter. The new location is 103 Everett St., in Bodo Industrial Park directly west of Office Depot. The new showroom displays products from more than 60 vendors. The business also is a Custom Building Products distributor. The staff of seven includes an interior designer. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Stanley Steemer in Pagosa Springs

Stanley Steemer announces its opening in Pagosa Springs.

The business is owned by Ryan and Laura Martinez. Ryan has worked for Stanley Steemer International for the last 11 years in Fort Collins where he was a technician, training supervisor and branch manager. Laura is a Colorado State University graduate with a natural-resources management major and a minor in forestry.

The business provides floor and upholstery deep-cleaning services and products and is an Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America-certified cleaner.

Pagosa Springs’ Sears remodels store

The refresh of the Sears Hometown and Outlet Store in Pagosa Springs culminated with a grand reopening celebration from April 23 to 25 at 2800 Cornerstone Drive.

The store refresh included a new product assortment, redesigned merchandising, new fixtures and signage and comprehensive employee training, among other changes. In the new store design, appliances will occupy more than half of the sales floor and include more brands.

Enterprise Zone boundaries to change

Southwest Enterprise Zone boundaries are changing, effective on Jan. 1, 2016, The changes will affect many businesses and Enterprise Zone Contribution Projects in La Plata and Archuleta counties.

The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado, as the Southwest Enterprise Zone Administrator, will host information meetings for area tax-preparation needs and affected businesses. The presentation will cover options for businesses that use tax credits and are going out of the zone; detailed maps and information on the new boundaries; a tax-credit overview; regional statistics on the credits; and reviewing the online precertification and certification system. Updated boundary maps and handout system-user guides will also be available.

The meetings will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at these locations:

May 6 at the Pagosa Quality Resort in the south-facing room, 3505 East U.S. Highway 160.

May 12 at the Cortez Recreation Center in the Mesa Room, 425 Roger Smith Ave.

May 13 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

With the proposed changes, several census tracts in Archuleta and La Plata counties will no longer be eligible, but several previously ineligible areas in La Plata County now meet the criteria.

Workshop to help you with QuickBooks

Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center and First National Bank of Durango will sponsor “Introduction to QuickBooks” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 20 at the First National Bank Training Room, 259 W. Ninth St.

Lunch will be taken from noon to 1 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a brown-bag lunch. People should use street parking. This workshop will be taught by Certified QuickBooks Pro-Advisor Bethany McManus. Designed for business owners who are not accountants, McManus will explain how the software works and how it can help manage the finances of a business and save time. Topics will include: the set-up process; the creation of an effective chart of accounts; small-business accounting every owner should know; strategies for managing cash flow; how to make bill paying less painful; strategies for getting paid faster; and the power of a good profit-and-loss statement.

The cost is $70 or $65 for Durango Chamber of Commerce members.

Starting a business workshop to be held

The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center and First SouthWest Bank will sponsor “Starting Your Business” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 14 at the Durango Public Library Program Room, 1900 East Third Ave.

This course is designed to help people navigate through the steps needed to start a successful business. Presenters will include a small-business specialist, marketing expert, small-business banker, an attorney and an accountant. Topics will include: business planning, legal structure, taxes, marketing and market research and finance options.

The fee for the workshop is $25 or $20 for Durango Chamber of Commerce members.

Another marijuana dispensary opens

The Greenery, one of Durango’s newest retail marijuana dispensaries, announced its grand opening this month at 208 Parker Ave., Suite E, in Bodo Industrial Park.

The Greenery is owned and operated by longtime Durango residents and Fort Lewis alumni, Joel Cameron and Brian Capsay. The Greenery is fully staffed by longtime Durango residents and Fort Lewis College graduates who have all been an active part of the Durango community for more than a decade.

Cameron moved to Durango in 2004. Capsay moved to the area in 1993. On staff at the Greenery, customers will be assisted by Melissa Nichols, Russ Crossland and Sam Redman.

The Greenery – open seven days a week – offers fine-grade strains, edibles, drinks and more marijuana products.

KOA to open for camping season

The Durango KOA Holiday Campground, 30090 U.S. Highway 160, will open for the 2015 camping season on Friday.

New staff hired at Durango Arts Center

The Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., announces the addition of three new staff members. Eric Bulrice will be facilities manager and technical director. Kathrene Frautschy will serve as director of development and Beth Santistevan as the administrative operations coordinator.

Bulrice will oversee the day-to-day maintenance and operations of the building, and manages the technical resources in the theater.

Frautschy will administer a development program in support of DAC’s role as the community’s leader in exploring, fostering and celebrating the visual and performing arts.

Santistevan will support the entirety of DAC operations including oversight of class and art workshop registrations, box-office ticket sales, coordinating volunteers including recruitment and supervision.
