Letters: I always love living in Durango

This was my letter to the editor sent to The Durango Herald in 1979:

“Let me tell you about the town where I live. It’s a small town with a large heart.

“We have our problems and disagreements about how the town should grow and in which direction. People don’t always agree with the city council or the county commissioners. Water districts, bridges, water meters – petitions for and against circulate throughout our town.

“Let me tell you what we do have.

“We have a city where I feel safe at night. I can walk down Main Avenue and say hello to someone I know.

“My son will grow up in this town and know the policeman and fireman are his friends and neighbors. He can look up and see blue skies and breathe clean air.

“The town cares about the children and the elderly.

“Lots of people fall in love with Durango. Some come back for visits, some move here and some move away. But while we are here we all need reminders of how good it really is to live in this community.

“Look out your front door and see the mountains. Wake up to a white blanket of freshly fallen snow. Walk in the woods and fish in the streams. Watch the aspens change colors. Summer softball games and winter basketball teams, the UPS man, the bank teller who knows your name, the smiling grocery clerk – all these people, experiences and feelings are why this town is our town.”

True words in 1979 and true today.
