Two quick goals from St. Mary’s signaled the end of the season for the Bayfield High School girls soccer season.
Marisa Shigio and Katherine Chartier both scored in the opening 10 minutes for No. 11 St. Mary’s, and the Wolverines never found an answer in what became a 3-0 loss in the opening round of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A Girls Soccer State Tournament Wednesday in Colorado Springs.
“It was a slow start after killer travel,” BHS head coach Jen Moore said. “It’s always hard when you get here and then have a whole day to try to entertain the girls but keep an edge. We just started slow.”
BHS (8-7-1) limited the damage by defending corner kicks well in the first half. But May Brummel found a goal in the 46th minute for St. Mary’s (12-3-1) to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead. From there, the Pirates were able to defend the lead.
“The last 30 minutes, the girls showed passion and heart and turned it up,” Moore said.
Shigio’s opening goal came in the eighth minute with an assist from Katie Fowler. Shigio slotted her shot into the bottom left corner to beat BHS goalkeeper Lana McKee.
In the 10th minute, a shot by Brummel went off McKee, and Chartier was there to collect the rebound and finish the goal.
Brummel’s goal came off a corner kick.
Moore said senior Savannah Kaufmann and freshman Halle Loveday each had two good shots in the final 30 minutes of the match, but neither could beat the Pirates’ keeper Becca Dunbaugh.
Of Bayfield’s seven losses in 2018, two came to St. Mary’s, which beat the Wolverines 5-0 on March 17 in Colorado Springs. Next for the Pirates is a second-round match at No. 6 Manitou Springs (13-2), which had a first-round bye.
BHS will lose talented seniors in Misty Helton, Kaufmann and Sophie Turner. Kaufmann had an unbelievable career with 59 goals and 15 assists for 133 points since her sophomore season. She scored 24 goals and had nine assists her senior season.
But 75 percent of this year’s roster was made up of freshmen and sophomores, and that gives Moore a positive foundation going into the next season.
“We did a great job coming back this year and making the playoffs after a really rough year last year,” Moore said. “We have a big loss with the three seniors who will be hard to replace, but with so many freshmen and sophomores on this year’s team, I know we will be back in the playoffs next year.”
