Emma Costello earns dean’s list
Emma Costello of Durango was named to the second semester high honors dean’s list at Stephens College for the 2014-15 academic year.
Students who attain high honors must have finished at least the equivalent of 12 credit hours and achieved a GPA of 3.8 to 4.0.
Costello, who has completed her freshman year, is a theater management major. She is a graduate of Durango High School and the daughter of Jeanne D. Costello.
Stephens College is in Columbia, Missouri.
Brayden Mitchell named to dean’s list
Brayden Mitchell of Pagosa Springs has been named to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater dean’s list for the 2015 spring semester.
Dean’s list students have demonstrated their academic abilities by receiving a GPA of 3.4 or above in a single semester.
Childhood council offering grants
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County is accepting applications from child care programs (homes and centers) in Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma and San Juan counties.
Expansion grants are available to increase child care slots for infants and toddlers by offering a one-time expansion grant to licensed programs or programs pursuing licensing to accommodate a greater number of children ages 0 to 3 years old in the five-county region of Southwest Colorado.
The council is a recipient of the Colorado Infant and Toddler Quality and Availability Grant and a grant from the EL Pomar Foundation in partnership with the Southwest Colorado Early Childhood Collaborative.
The maximum amount of the award is $1,500 per infant/toddler slot. The application deadline has been extended July 20.

Social-work licensure course available
A social-work licensure course will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Commons Building, Room 219, 701 Camino del Rio.
This course will prepare social workers for the Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Advanced Generalist examinations.
The program costs $275. It includes flash cards, study guide, cram session and dinner Friday night and Saturday snacks.

Megan Ganley makes dean’s list
Megan D. Ganley, a resident of Durango, was named to the dean’s list at Boston University for the spring semester.
Each school and college at Boston University has its own criteria for the dean’s list, but full-time students generally must attain a 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or be in the top 30 percent of their class.
Girls can attend the Mermaid Club
The Durango Mermaid Club will offer weeklong camps at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
Private and semi-private sessions will be available. The camps will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday to Friday from July 6 to July 10, July 13 to July 17 and July 20 to July 24. The cost is $100 per week.
The club, led by Fort Lewis College graduate Catherine Rathbone, is designed to help girls feel strong and beautiful.
