Bayfield boys and girls sine at Abel Velasquez Invitational

Boys and girls win track meet

A slew of Bayfield athletes took multiple first-place finishes Saturday at the Abel Velasquez Invitational at Ignacio High School, as both the boys and girls teams won.

The boys finished with 148.5 points, while the girls finished with 153. Montezuma-Cortez took second in both boys and girls. The boys finished with 107.5 points, while the girls scored 115. The Mancos boys team took third place with 86 points, and the Dolores girls took third with 98 points.

Durango’s junior varsity finished fourth in the boys and girls. The boys had 67.5 points, while the girls had 53.5 points.

Bayfield’s Brian Mashak placed first in the 100-meter dash in 11.33 seconds, a new personal record. Because of a recording error from the time scorers times, there were no official times for the 200-meter dash. Coaches and officials decided not to re-run the race, but Mashak was first to the finish in the untimed event.

Mashak also was on the Bayfield 4x200-meter relay team that took first with a time of 1 minute, 34.6 seconds. Gus Roberts, Carl Heide and David Hawkins rounded out the team.

Bayfield, however, surprisingly lost the 4x100 relay to Montezuma-Cortez. The team of Coby Baer, Josh Ramos, Austin Wagner and Elisha Vaquera won with a time of 46.06 to best Bayfield’s team of Mashak, Josh Westbrook, Jaden Vitagliano and Hawkins.

Roberts was also on the 4x400 relay team that took first with a time of 3:44.67. Ethan Tate and both Jesse Westbrook and Josh Westbrook were on that team. Durango’s team of David Lee, Joaquin Valdez, Bryan Dunlop and Josh Johnson took second in 3:54.7.

Bayfield’s Alex Knight, Sloan Mazur, Brandon Steuver and Cody Speece took first place in the 4x800 relay with a time of 8:59.17. Durango took second in 9:26.75 with the team of Will Meyer, Will Swenson, Marcus Flint and Sam Dippold.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Heide took first for Bayfield with a time of 16.61 seconds. Heide also took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.19 seconds. Dolores’ Tristan Medina narrowly took first in 43.17 seconds.

Cash Snooks took first in the pole vault with a jump of 9 feet, 6 inches. Bayfield’s Chad Winkler and Colton Fine took second and third in the pole vault. Winkler had a jump of 9-0, and Fine cleared 8-6.

Fellow BHS field athlete Sam Westbrook took first in the discus with a throw of 125 feet, 5 inches. Ignacio’s Natoni Cundiff took second in the discus with a throw of 111-2. Westbrook took second in the shot put with a throw of 41-2. Montezuma-Cortez’ Victor Perez won the event with 43-1 throw.

Durango’s Coltin Gallegos took first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:17.32. In the high jump, Lee took first for Durango with a jump of 5 feet, 9 inches.

On the girls side, Bayfield’s relay teams were running well, taking first in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400.

The 4x100 relay team of Madeleine Foutz, Courtney Bayles, Isis Gonzales and Tymbree Florian won with a time of 54.12. The 4x200 team of Bridget Goddard, Amber Johnson, Foutz and Bayles won with a time of 1:52.96.

Foutz also won the 200 with a time of 27.92 with Johnson coming in third with 28.61. Florian also won the long jump with a leap of 15-9. Goddard won the 800 with a time of 2:32.71. Durango’s Maggie Wigton took third with 2:48.9.

Katie Hawkins won the pole vault for Bayfield with a jump of 8-7. Emily Bauer of Bayfield took second with a jump of 8-1. Ignacio’s Chrystianne Valdez took third with 7-7.

In the shot put, Bayfield’s Tiarra Christensen took first with a throw of 31-4. Ignacio’s Alana Watts took third with 30-0.

For Durango, Emily Edwards-Colsman took first in the 1,600 with a time of 6:19.36. Marit May of Durango took third with a run of 6:26.17. May took first in the 3,200 with a run of 18:08.21.

Ignacio’s Azala Perez took second in the 100 with a run of 13.74 seconds. Florian took third for Bayfield with 13.87.

In the triple jump, Tori Tate and Jade Sanders took second and third, respectively for Bayfield. Tate took a jump of 30-3 and Sanders took 29-6.

The next meet on schedule for Bayfield and Ignacio is the Pine River Invitational, which will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bayfield High School.
