A Seattle rhymer
At one point in his life, Seattle indie rapper Grieves was enrolled in a business program at Fort Lewis College, but he opted out and pursued a music career in Seattle instead. So far, it’s worked out for him. He’s now on one of the most successful hip-hop indie labels, Rhymesayers Entertainment, and shares stages with artists such as Atmosphere and Brother Ali. See him play Saturday at Animas City Theatre with opener Grayskul. The 18-and-older show starts at 9 p.m., and tickets are $17.
Dancing for a good cause
When’s the last time you danced in a barn? Break out your flannel and boots for the first Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering Barn Dance and Picnic. The fundraiser features the local favorite country-western Tim Sullivan Band and cowboy poet Lindy Simmons. Prairie Fire Percherons will offer horse-drawn wagon rides along the Animas River. The picnic is BYOB (and food), with hot dogs and s’mores also available for purchase. A fundraiser for Future Farmers of America, 4-H Horse Council and the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the event will be held rain or shine from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at River Bend Ranch (formerly Sleeping Beauty Ranch). Tickets are $15 at the door (no credit cards), and kids 12 and younger are free. Pets are not allowed. Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to bring chairs.
Sizzling Bacon
The Balcony Backstage is bringing the Bacon. The Durango funk and soul band is coming off a six-month hiatus and will be playing new songs they’ve added to their repertoire. “We like to make people dance, so hopefully we can do that,” said founding member and trumpet player Chris Ross. “We’ve been playing a lot of funk, a lot of reggae and ska now, too.” The band, which formed in 2012, recently had some lineup changes and will be debuting a new look, as well as a newer, fresher sound. Check out the show at 10 p.m. Friday. No cover.
