Revelers who leave their cars downtown on New Year’s Eve risk being towed.
The city of Durango has a no-parking rule at signed spots from 2 to 5 a.m.
“That’s not just during snow times,” Lt. Ray Shupe of the Durango Police Department said. “We tow cars in the summer as well as the winter.”
Extra officers will be on duty Wednesday night, Shupe said.
“We always staff up extra for New Year’s Eve,” he said. “It’s a high-impact holiday for us.”
Shupe recommended holiday celebrants have a plan for how to get home without leaving a car downtown.
“The big thing that we like to push is the designated drivers,” Shupe said. “Really, just pre-plan your night.”
The Buzz Bus will run from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. for a safe ride home. Cabs also will be available.
Drivers should expect to deal with snow, which is forecast to begin falling in Durango around 9 p.m.
“Your best snowfall will fall after midnight and into Thursday,” said Joe Ramey, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Junction. “It’ll snow all day Thursday and into the evening hours.”
Durango can expect 4 to 8 inches from this storm, with 8 to 16 inches forecast to fall in the San Juan Mountains, Ramey said.
Snow is on the way from the west, with snowfall reported Wednesday in Page, Arizona, and Bryce, Utah, he said.
Sub-zero temperatures will follow, with a forecast low of minus 8 on Thursday night.
