La Plata County’s treasurer said residents should receive property tax notices by the end of this month.
Notices, Treasurer Allison Aichele said, are mailed to addresses on file with the Assessor’s Office.
“Even if you do not receive your notice, you are still responsible for the tax payment,” Aichele wrote in a statement to The Durango Herald. “You may obtain a duplicate notice on the La Plata County website, or by calling the Treasurer’s Office.”
Homeowners with a mortgage with an escrow account are advised to check with their bank as to when they will be paying their taxes.
“You are paying your taxes through your mortgage payments,” Aichele said. “If you both pay the property taxes, we will refund the money to the person or entity that paid second.”
The Treasurer’s Office passes on all property taxes collected to the local taxing authorities, such as the school districts, library districts, fire districts, among others, the month after the office’s collection of taxes from residents.
Residents may pay taxes in two half payments on March 2 and June 15 or in one full payment on April 30. Partial payments will be returned. Interest accrues after the payment deadlines, per the schedule on a resident’s tax notice. Also, on the back of a tax notice is information about the senior and veteran exemptions.
