Pancakes, pie, a nationally-renowned runner, parade and lots of activities in Joe Stephenson Park rounded out Independence Day festivities in Bayfield.
The celebration continued Tuesday night in Joe Stephenson Park with music by Million Dollar Highway from 7 to 9 p.m., followed by fireworks at dusk.
John Cusick, who took fourth in the 1,500 meters in the NCAA Division II meet in May, cruised to an easy win at the Firecracker 5K on Tuesday morning, a run and walk to benefit the La Plata Family Centers Coalition. The event is sponsored by Momentum Fitness and AJ’s Greenhouse.
The Bayfield Lions Club and Calvary Presbyterian Church reported strong sales at the annual pancake breakfast and the pie sale.
During the parade, the Bayfield Realty float proudly proclaimed “Bayfield is still better than Durango” while poking fun at the big city’s inflated real estate prices.
After the big event on Mill Street, the crowd of people headed to Joe Stephenson Park. Kids and dogs cooled off in the ditch as the high school cheerleaders sold Navajo tacos and the wrestling team served hamburgers made from local beef.
A duck race, corn hole tournament and beers in the Pine River Centennial Rotary tent wrapped up the day’s festivities.
