I read the letter “Noise and drunkeness ruin stay in town,” from Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey (Herald, Sept. 28) this morning and am compelled to offer a warning.
Durango needs to get a handle on the public partying atmosphere before it destroys your town. Please don’t sell your soul to the liquor distributors and bars like we have done in New Orleans. It’s quick (and apparently easy) bucks, but you lose a lot in terms of quality of life. And remember that the quality of life you should care about most is that of the residents.
At least one economic study contends that our JazzFest in the spring brings more money into town than Mardi Gras; a lot fewer people, but they spend a lot more (and not just on getting plastered).
I love Durango and visit every chance I get. I would live there if my hometown of New Orleans did not exist (and we came close in 2005).
Save yourselves before it’s too late.
