4 injured in head-on near N.M. border

Law enforcement and rescue personnel investigate the scene of a two-vehicle head-on collision about eight miles north of the New Mexico line. The crash temporarily closed U.S. Highway 550 on Thursday morning.

Four people were injured Thursday in a head-on collision that closed U.S. Highway 550 near the New Mexico border for 30 minutes.

A Chevy Malibu hit a Ford F-150 eight miles from the New Mexico line around 10:45 a.m., said Sgt. Ben Steger with the Colorado State Patrol.

The driver of the southbound Malibu was passing other vehicles and lost control of the car before hitting the northbound truck, Steger said.

Four people traveling in the truck were taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with injury. The most serious injury likely a dislocated shoulder, he said.

The driver of the car, who was traveling alone, was not injured. He was cited for careless driving in what was determined not to be a weather-related collision, Capt. Adrian Driscoll said.
