And the West is History

100 years ago: “The mixing of youth hardly out of their swaddling clothes and bootleg whiskey is rapidly becoming a common occurrence in Pagosa. The occasion of the dance Wednesday night furnished the latest example of the low depravity of the human who will give or sell liquor to a boy. Whither art we drifting.” – Pagosa Sun

75 years ago: An advertisement for L. Gardenswartz Sporting Goods read, “Winter sports are just starting. ... Get your skiing equipment, skating equipment at winter sports headquarters.”

50 years ago: “R.W. Turner, president of Turner Industrial Bank announced to the San Juan Historical Society of Silverton the Turner family has given funds necessary for the society to purchase the ‘Casey Jones’ narrow gauge car from Ralph Atlass.”

25 years ago: “Prediction: Dick and Jane’s Place will continue to be one of the most popular places in Southwest Colorado to buy a lottery ticket in 1990. Skeptics can ask Tom Pruitt of Aztec, New Mexico, who walked away from Dick and Jane’s a $15,000 instant winner in the Winner-Take-All game. Dick and Jane’s continues to be the No. 1 retailer in Colorado of Lotto and lottery tickets.”
