Woman’s death marks 16th suicide this year in La Plata County

A Bayfield woman died earlier this week from what appears to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Jann Smith, La Plata County coroner.

Jackie Nelson, 49, was found dead inside her house shortly before 8 a.m. Monday, Smith said.

She last spoke to a family member about 3 a.m. Monday.

Smith said she has no information about what issues Nelson may have been dealing with leading up to her death.

Foul play is not suspected.

Her death marks the 16th suicide this year in La Plata County.
