International ‘Clap Because We Care’ coming to Durango

Sunday night, residents can cheer for workers fighting COVID-19
Durangoans can take to their doorsteps Sunday night to clap and cheer in support of health care, public service and other workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 response.

Durango is joining in on a national effort to say thank you to health professionals, grocery store and restaurant workers and others – through online and in-person applause.

People in New York City, Seattle, Madrid, London and across Europe have taken to their balconies to clap and cheer in support of the critical employees still working.

Anna Peterson, a La Plata County resident, wants to bring the heartwarming sounds of applause to Durango on Sunday.

“We are all feeling isolated, scared and wonder how to help, Peterson wrote in an email. “It just felt like it would be nice to collectively put some positive energy out to the community.

She is asking Durangoans to step onto their doorsteps at 7 p.m. Sunday to clap and cheer for two minutes in support of the workers fighting the spread of COVID-19, treating ill patients and helping Southwest communities stay steady through the crisis.

Once the clap is done, residents can post videos of the short event to social media with the hashtag, #DGOClapBecauseWeCare.

“The world and all of us could benefit from some more collective joy – even if it’s just from little Durango and from our front doors, Peterson said.
