100 years ago: The Denver & Rio Grande installed additional electric headlights on tea kettles to allow engineers a brighter view of the tracks as fall approached and the days became darker.
75 years ago: Librarians in Durango announced children’s book week would be held Nov. 13-19 and include a special display in the children’s room at the local library.
50 years ago: Residents were informed that the 49th annual Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Club convention would be held Sept. 12-15 in Durango. The three-day event, which would “blend business with pleasure,” expected to attract 500 to 600 club members.
25 years ago: La Plata County Sheriff’s Office received at least three calls from residents who claimed they saw “something that looked like a falling star that was very large and had visible flames that could have been a plane descending at a very steep angle in the vicinity of Gem Village.” Animas Air Park reported that all planes were accounted for, but assisted in a search. Nothing was found.
