And the West is History

The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: Stock inspector Sam Ethridge was in Mancos to pick up a shipment of cattle and then return to Durango. His next big cattle trip would be to Pagosa Springs.

75 years ago: The year’s big game yield from hunters in the Durango area was reported to be up to 72 deer, eight elk, five bears and one mountain lion.

50 years ago: Labor Day was reported to be a holiday for “almost everyone except city crews who collect trash.” They would be out on their regular schedule Monday morning.

25 years ago: A woman reported to Durango Police Department that her daughter was bitten by a cat in the 2200 block of Crestview Drive. Officers who responded “picked up and quarantined the cat and cited the cat’s owner.”
