Bear researcher to present findings

La Plata County’s Living with Wildlife Advisory Board will host an evening with Heather Johnson, a researcher with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Second Ave.

Johnson has been studying Durango’s bear population for the last six years. This is her final year of research and the talk will be informative.

The event is free and open to the public.

Exemption of property tax may be available

A property tax exemption may be available for qualifying seniors, disabled veterans and surviving spouses of those who previously qualified. This tax exemption starts in 2016, affecting taxes payable in 2017.

For those who qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 of the actual value of their primary residence may be exempt. The state pays the tax on the portion that is exempt from property tax if monies are available.

Once approved, the exemption remains in effect for future years.

To apply, contact the La Plata County Assessor’s Office at 382-6228. The application deadline is July 15.

Disabled veterans should contact the Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs for an application. The application deadline for disabled veterans is July 1 with the Division of Veterans Affairs.

Expect traffic delays in Silverton this week

The Colorado Department of Transportation is beginning a road maintenance project on U.S. Highway 550 near Silverton.

The three-day project will start Monday on either side of the highway entrance to the town of Silverton. The preventative maintenance project for the five-mile section of road is expected to be completed by Wednesday.

Motorists are advised to adhere to posted speed limits to reduce the likelihood of windshield damage. Motorcyclists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling through the work zone.

Input welcome on transportation plan

Residents are invited to weigh in on the city’s Multimodal Transportation Master Plan at a lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The plan examines the community’s needs for accessibility, public transit services, pedestrians, bicycles, safe routes to school and connectivity between the transportation networks.

This year, the city is updating the 2012 plan to reflect the current needs of our community, including a parking analysis and a more in-depth look at public transit needs and accessibility deficiencies.

Compañeros offers immigration advice

An informational session on immigration rules for parents of U.S. citizens will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

In 2014, President Barack Obama announced a new program called Deferred Action for Parental Accountability. This program allows the parents of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who have continuously resided in the U.S. since before January 2010 to remain in the country without fear of deportation.

Danny Quinlan, executive director of Compañeros: Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center, will give the presentation on the program. A question-and-answer session will follow.
