DENVER – A man accused of intentionally swerving his car toward police and hitting three officers during a protest over racial injustice and police brutality pleaded not guilty on Monday.
A lawyer for Anthony Knapp, 37, entered the plea on his behalf to charges including attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference as well as assault and leaving the scene of an accident during a short online hearing.
Knapp, who is being held in jail, did not speak except to say thank you to the judge at the end of the hearing.
The officers who were hit were standing next to a parked police truck that was monitoring a protest near the state Capitol on May 30. According to a court document explaining why Knapp was arrested, police said Knapp swerved toward the truck at a high rate of speed and hit the officers, breaking the leg of one of them. There were nine other officers in or near the vehicle that were also put at risk, the document said.
Knapp’s statements to police were redacted from the document released to the public.
