Debris flow closes section of East Animas Road north of Durango

A debris flow from recent snowmelt has resulted in the closure of a section of East Animas Road (County Road 250), north of Durango.

East Animas Road is closed in the 2700 block, or about 2.7 miles north of city limits – a section of road with a history of debris flows during spring runoff and heavy rains.

The section of road is closed until further notice, La Plata County government said Friday night in a news release.

Northbound traffic up to the 2700 block of East Animas Road should not be affected by the closure. Drivers who must access East Animas Road north of the closure must use U.S. Highway 550 to Trimble Lane (County Road 252), which leads to the northern sections of East Animas Road.

Variable message sign boards will be place just north of city limits and just south of Trimble Lane to notify drivers of the road closure.
