Elect U.S. presidents by popular vote

The story on the electoral college (Herald, Nov. 12) was very informative. It stated, “Most states give all their electoral votes to whichever candidate wins the state’s popular vote.” The U.S. Constitution states that each state’s legislature determines how the electors are chosen from that state.

Currently, Colorado has a “winner take all” method for the presidential election. The Colorado Legislature can change this method. Go to www.nationalpopularvote.com to get more information and to sign a petition to urge the Colorado Legislature to make this change. With the popular vote within each state divided among the candidates, the will of the people will be correctly applied.

This is not a partisan issue; both parties would benefit from the results. Two states, Nebraska and Maine, already split out electoral votes. Let’s elect our president in the same manner as we elect all our other national, state and local leaders, by the popular vote, “one person, one vote.”
