Fort Lewis men’s and women’s soccer stars dominate RMAC awards

Cleary, Lawrence, Sanchez claim the weekly awards

A perfect 4-0 weekend of play by the Fort Lewis College soccer teams turned a few heads in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Skyhawks’ men’s team (6-2, 3-0 RMAC) picked up a 2-0 win against Adams State and a 3-1 victory against CSU-Pueblo, with Zac Lawrence helping lead the way with two goals and two assists and freshman defender Sean Clearly scoring a goal and allowing only three shots on goal while playing all 180 minutes of the two games.

The women’s team (5-2-1, 3-1 RMAC) added consecutive 2-1 victories against Colorado Mesa and Westminster College, with sophomore Alicia Sanchez recording both game-winning goals.

With those performances, the three FLC players were clear choices for weekly RMAC awards.

Lawrence, a senior from Albuquerque, was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week after recording points on four of the five FLC goals last week. It is the first-ever conference award for Lawrence, who now has three goals and four assists this year for 10 points.

Cleary, a redshirt freshman from Colorado Springs, netted his second goal of the season against CSU-Pueblo. He helped lead the back line of all freshmen to a strong week, helping him earn his first conference award as the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Collin Hall, the goalkeeper for No. 18 Colorado Mines, was named the conference’s goalkeeper of the week after consecutive shutouts against Metro State and UC-Colorado Springs. He made nine saves during the week and now has four clean sheets in a row.

The Fort Lewis men’s team has now won six games in a row and received nine votes in the latest NCAA Division II poll, which would rank 27th in the poll extended past the top 25. The Skyhawks sit alone in second place of the RMAC with a home game at 3 p.m. Friday against Westminster College looming next. After that, FLC will travel to face Colorado Mesa at noon Sunday.

Sanchez, a sophomore from Albuquerque, was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on the women’s side with her strong effort. She scored a penalty kick goal in extra time to beat Colorado Mesa as part of her two game-winners. She now has three goals and one assist this season to lead FLC with seven points.

Metro State’s Taylor Campbell was the RMAC Defensive Player of the week after helping the Roadrunners to a 1-0-1 week in which they recorded a 3-0 win against Colorado Christian and a scoreless draw against No. 16 Colorado Mines.

The Roadrunners’ Breanna Flores was the conference’s goalkeeper of the week after recording two clean sheets thanks to making 13 saves.

UC-Colorado Springs is ranked No. 21 in the country and will visit FLC’s Dirks Field at 1 p.m. Sunday. But before that game, Western State will visit the Skyhawks at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
