The Bayfield High School volleyball team has gotten the most out of its short season with a string of three consecutive five-set matches. The Wolverines have won all three, too.
BHS kept it going Tuesday night with a 3-2 win at Pagosa Springs (25-12, 16-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-12). It backed up a huge 3-2 home win Saturday against No. 8 Alamosa following a 3-2 win against Centauri at home last Friday.
“I think over time we are proving to be resilient,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “I love that about them, and it’s not a surprise. We have been serving tougher in late sets than we are in the beginning, and we have a habit of starting slow. We’ve been discussing lately having a hard start and starting from zero. We continue to work on it.”
BHS (7-3, 5-3 3A/2A Intermountain League) had 11 aces in the fourth and fifth sets combined Tuesday against the Pirates (3-6, 0-5 IML).
Melissa Roberts led BHS with 14 kills in the win. Macee Schulz helped BHS with 12 kills with a .467 hitting percentage.
“We changed our lineup quite a bit the last two sets, and it made a big difference in our offensive rhythm and block scheme,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “The pass team stepped up in the fifth, allowing us to deliver to our middle hitter team of Macee and Melissa.”
With six wins in their last eight matches, the Wolverines will travel Wednesday to face non-league rival Durango High School, which stands undefeated at 8-0 this season.
“I’m excited about it. I’m sure they’ve watched us on film, and we’ve watched them,” Foutz said. “It’s going to be a good battle. We are both good serve and pass teams. It’s going to come down to consistency and a clean net game, and we are looking forward to it.”
