Stop by for the best chai

Chai tea has become as ubiquitous as drip coffee in America, served at restaurants and food carts, available to purchase in groceries and gourmet stores.

The spice-filled black tea originated in India (although other countries claim it as their own as well) and is made with hot milk, sugar and most commonly, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and pepper.

But one of the best cups you’ll find anywhere is prepared right here in Durango at the Himalayan Kitchen by proprietor Karma Bhotia. The delicious beverage appears in a simple ceramic cup, a creamy brown liquid flavored the traditional Nepalese way – which Bhotia will not reveal.

“We have special spices,” he says, grinning.

He adds that a hot cup of chai is good for the immune system. Other sources laud it for its digestive properties. I just call it a wonderful pick-me-up on a cold Durango day.
