Best bets this weekend include the Marvel chili cook-off and Slow Turbo.
Marvel Grange will host its annual chili cook-off and dessert auction to benefit needy families at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Marvel Grange Hall, 217 County Road 133A.
To enter the cook-off, participants must bring 1 gallon of ready-to-serve chili and a $10 entry fee. Depending on the numbers, there may be two categories, red or green. The grange will provide crackers, cheese, onions and beverages.
Everyone is encouraged to bring a dessert or special food item to auction off. The proceeds from the auction will be used to help needy families in the area with their electric bills.
Slow Turbo will play an acoustic show from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at 550 Brewing, 119 N. Main Ave., Aztec.
Hailing from Flagstaff, Arizona, Slow Turbo is a group of rock veterans playing a mix of originals and indie/alt-rock covers. Inspired by bands like the Pixies, Pavement, the Strokes and Foo Fighters, they have arranged classic songs to be played on acoustic guitars with percussion.
The show is free to the public.
Members of Slow Turbo have performed around Arizona and throughout the Southwest for nearly two decades in a variety of bands, including the Shiners, Crooked Numbers, War Lights, Emperors of Japan and Sun Elk.
