Renowned painter to show and speak
The Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will present the William Matthews exhibit “Our West Now” showing Friday through Oct. 24, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday featuring music by the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering.
In conjunction with the exhibit, the arts center also will feature the documentary film, “William Matthews: Drawn to Paint,” at 6 p.m. Oct. 2, with a second showing at 8:15 p.m. in the center’s theater. Tickets are $10. The 6 p.m. showing will follow a gallery tour and talk led by William Matthews from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Barbara Conrad Gallery.
‘Home Under the Stars’ coming
The Durango Arts Center and Kogan Builders will host an evening of art and architecture titled, “Homes Under the Stars,” from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at 2167 Deer Valley Road at Trapper’s Crossing.
The evening emphasizes the union of artful home design and the visual arts. The Durango Arts Center has curated artwork by local artists to be displayed within the Trapper’s Crossing home designed and built by Kogan Builders and featured in the 2015 Parade of Homes. The arts center and Kogan Builders invites the public for a preview reception of the home designed to showcase a private art collection. Tickets are $20 and available through the Parade of Homes website or at any local bank. People may visit all 2015 Parade of Homes with ticket purchase Friday to Sunday.

Kroeker to perform at Mesa Verde
Musician and vocalist Marilyn Kroeker will serve as Mesa Verde National Park’s Artist in Residence from Monday through Oct. 11.
Kroeker and her band, Sweetwater Station, will give a free public performance at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Far View Lodge Lounge, upstairs from the Metate Room, in Mesa Verde National Park. Kroeker will spend her residency exploring the park and composing music with her bandmates. Sweetwater Station has been together for two years. This is the second time Marilyn has been chosen as a Mesa Verde Artist in Residence. In addition to her musical pursuits, Kroeker is a potter and the proprietor of Raven House Gallery in Mancos.

Sacred Hula moves to Smiley Building
Sacred Hula announces that it is moving to the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.
Hula is meditation-in-motion, soothing for the soul, healthy, fun discipline for the body. Classes will be available at 10:15 a.m. Mondays and 5:45 p.m. Thursdays starting Monday. Beginner instruction will be offered 15 minutes before class. The cost is $12 each or $10 with punch pass.

Revival of Lost Souls, Studio &’s annual Day of the Dead show, will open with a reception Oct. 30. Art dropoff will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29. As part of this annual celebration, the studio will create a community alter/shrine and invite any and all to contribute tokens of memory in celebration of people, places, ideas, pets and things past.
Artists are sought for the studio’s third annual Bizarre Bazaar, to be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 11, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 12, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 13. Twenty-five artists will display and sell their wares. Space is reserved by paying an entry fee. The deadline for entry is Nov. 2.

San Juan Symphony to open season
Cellist Inbal Segev will perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 in the San Juan Symphony’s season-opening concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Fort Lewis College’s Community Concert Hall, led by conductor Blake Richardson.
Segev and the San Juan Symphony will repeat the performance at 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at Montezuma-Cortez High School, 418 South Sligo St., Cortez.
Segev released her recording of the complete Cello Suites of J.S. Bach on Sept. 18 on the Vox label. Audiences will have the opportunity to look behind the scenes at the making of Segev’s album through a companion documentary film about her journey through the music of Bach. Segev has performed as soloist with many orchestras. Segev’s many honors include the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarship and top prizes at the Pablo Casals, Paulo, and Washington International Competitions.

Cowboy Poetry Gathering returns
The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering will be held from Thursday to Oct. 4 with headquarters in the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
The gathering brings in more than 40 cowboy poets, storytellers and musicians who play traditional cowboy music and tell authentic stories of life in the West. Evening performances will be held at the Henry Strater Theatre. Other activities include a Cowboy Poet Train on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a Cowboy Poet Trailride at Rapp Corral, and shows of fine Western art at Durango Arts Center, Sorrel Sky Gallery and Toh-Atin Gallery. A motorless Cowboy Parade will take place at 10 a.m. Oct. 3 on Main Avenue featuring horses, riders, wagons, walkers, llamas and longhorns. Free sessions of cowboy poetry and music will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at various venues in downtown Durango.
