Struggle continues for Fort Lewis softball team

Softball team swept at Colorado Christian

The rough start to the season continued over the weekend for the Fort Lewis College softball team.

The Skyhawks (1-16, 0-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) dropped both ends of back-to-back doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Colorado Christian (17-7, 7-1 RMAC). The four losses extended the team’s losing streak to 14 games.

In Saturday’s first game, things went south in a hurry for FLC as the Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the early innings.

The Skyhawks chipped away in the fourth and fifth innings as they racked up four unanswered runs. Tehenia Telliano’s groundrule double got the scoring started as she plated Angelique Elemen. Adriana Rosthenhausler kicked off a three-run fifth inning with a single that scored Tristen Gilbert. Gianna Melaragno’s sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Robyn Hall and Cassie Sloan stole home on a nifty double steal to cap off the frame and tighten the gap to 7-4.

The Cougars came right back, though, with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and a 3-run homer in the sixth that gave CCU a 13-4 lead and ended the game early by run rule.

Fort Lewis dropped Saturday’s second matchup 6-2. The Cougars scored the game’s first four runs, but FLC cut their lead in half in the fourth inning after Telliano and Gilbert blasted run-scoring doubles to get the Skyhawks on the scoreboard.

Olivia Goldberg did well in the pitcher’s circle to hold the Cougars down, but the FLC offense couldn’t pull off the comeback as the Cougars won 6-2.

Sunday’s first game was a tough one for FLC as it was shutout in a five-inning 8-0 loss. However, Fort Lewis showed a lot of heart in game two and nearly pulled it off.

The Skyhawks took a second-inning lead after a Mandy Owens single plated Hall. Colorado Christian came roaring back and eventually grabbed a 6-1 lead. Fort Lewis wasn’t done, though, as Elemen’s fifth-inning single scored two Skyhawks and Telliano’s double scored Elemen to cut the deficit to two.

Gilbert followed with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but FLC couldn’t cap off the comeback and lost 6-5.

Fort Lewis will try to break the streak next weekend at home against Metro State.
