Senior guard Turner Kennedy pumped in 26 points and senior guard/forward Hayden Farmer (11) and junior guard James Mottin (12) both joined him in double figures. Despite the effort, it wasn't enough to keep Bayfield's 35-28 halftime advantage from slipping away last Saturday afternoon, Dec. 15, inside BHS Gymnasium.
Hosting 5A Farmington, low-post starters Ethan Morris and Matt McSweeney both fouled out as the Scorpions stormed back to win the third quarter by 10 points, 24-14, and the fourth by eight, 25-17, to escape Wolverine Country with a 77-66 win.
Having returned from Blanding, Utah, and a 75-58 loss - despite a never-say-die 30 from Kennedy - at 3A San Juan the night before, the BHS boys dipped to 3-4 overall to close out the 2018 half of this winter's schedule.
While matching McSweeney's team-high six rebounds, Morris also managed to reproduce his own 9-point effort at SJHS. Both Farmer (7 in Blanding) and McSweeney (2 in Blanding, 6 versus FHS) both upped their scoring outputs, but Scorpion senior guard Josh Goats netted a game-best 31 points and senior forward Kobe Shorty 28 - 21 scored after halftime - in helping deal Bayfield a third straight loss.
Up next, the Wolverines will begin the New Year dueling 4A Durango on Jan. 4 during Day 1 of the Southwest Classic. Tipoff time has yet to be announced. BHS will then battle 2A Ignacio the next day.
