After a disappointing showing against Fruita Monument the day before, the Durango High School boys lacrosse team bounced back in a big way Saturday with a 13-4 win against Eagle Valley.
Kyle Robinette led Durango with five goals, three assists and seven ground balls.
“(Friday) was a disappointment, but we had a short turnaround, and we responded very well.” Durango head coach John Robinette said. “I’m very happy with the performance.”
The Demons got it going early when junior Jeb Steigelman scored on Durango’s first shot of the game. The stage was set from then on, as Durango didn’t let up all game.
After Steigelman’s initial score, he assisted his brother Jackson Steigelman for the game’s second score 25 seconds later. Moments later, Collin Barkley scored on an assist from Kyle Robinette.
Barkley had two goals, Jackson Steigelman had two goals and an assist, and Tommy Rodgers also had two goals and an assist. Jeb Steigelman had a goal and an assist. Cullen Robinette had two goals and two assists.
Durango (5-4, 2-2 4A Mountain League) ended the first quarter with a 7-1 lead and didn’t look back. The Demons outshot Eagle Valley (3-5, 2-4) 22-16 and also collected 10 more ground balls than the Devils, 28-18.
Easton Verduzco was 9-for-19 on faceoffs, and Andrew Brown had four saves at goalie.
“We had much better communication and better team defense,” coach Robinette said. “We corrected some of the stuff that we did wrong (Friday).”
On defense, Durango held Eagle Valley to only one goal. Hank Muir, Sam Aber, Dillon Coleman and Conner Coleman were the enforcers.
“They all did great on defense, those guys were stellar,” the coach said.
