Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

People’s best bets for the weekend include the Friends of the Durango Public Library summer book sale on Friday and Saturday, and the last day of business at Southwest Sound and an animal tracking workshop – both on Saturday.

The Friends of the Durango Public Library will hold its summer book sale from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Books, such as children’s, history, fiction, biographies, gardening, literature, cooking and more, will be sold at $1 per pound both days. Proceeds will go to the library and its branches to fund summer reading programs, the annual literary festival, games, e-books and more.

For more information, visit www.durangopubliclibrary.org.

Southwest Sound will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for the last time before it officially closes the doors of its 922 Main Ave. location.

The farewell event will include a blowout sale of its remaining merchandise and free refreshments. Community members are invited to stop in, shop for the final deals and say goodbye to the record store, which has served the Durango community since 1977.

Durango Nature Studies will hold the second session of an animal-tracking workshop series from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Nature Center in the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave., Suite 7.

The workshop, titled “sign tracking,” will be led by Nature Studies guide Grace Gordan, who will teach participants how to track and learn about animals through examining the signs they leave behind, such as footprints, small disturbances in the landscape, the contents of scat, etc.

Registration is free for Nature Studies members and costs $10 for nonmembers.

To register, call or email Grace Gordan at (740) 504-3398 or grace.durangonaturestudies@gmail.com. For more information, visit www.durangonaturestudies.org.
