2 children remain hospitalized after fatal crash

Two other injured kids released

Two children involved in a fatal car crash earlier this week in southwest La Plata County remained in satisfactory condition Wednesday in an Albuquerque hospital, according to a spokesman.

Arianna Aguilar, 1, and Shawn Martinez, 9, were flown to the University of New Mexico Hospital after the Monday morning crash, which occurred 1.6 miles north of the Colorado-New Mexico border on La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140).

Two other children, Angelo Aguilar, 5, and Andreas Martinez, 7, were not hospitalized as of Wednesday.

A fifth child, Mia Martinez, 8, of Durango died in the head-on crash.

The Colorado State Patrol said none of the five children was wearing a seat belt.

Neysha Candelaria, 32, of Durango, was cited with careless driving causing death.

Candelaria is suspected of driving a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander north when she hit snow and ice, losing control of her minivan and crossing into on-coming traffic.

She collided with a 2009 Kia Sorento driven by Mindy Walck, 38, of Hesperus.

Walck was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center, but she had been released as of Wednesday, said David Bruzzese, spokesman for the hospital.
