Doskocil named First Team All-SWL for BHS soccer

Thayor scores Second Team status in voting

Expected to lead Bayfield Boys' Soccer in an uphill battle to approach anywhere near last fall's lofty heights, Dylan Doskocil did about as much as double-teams and battered ankles would allow in 2018.

And the 3A/2A Southwestern (a.k.a. Intermountain) League's coaches took notice.

When the All-League rosters were recently announced, after Alamosa's 3A State Tournament-opening Round-of-32 loss to Colorado Springs Atlas Prep, and Crested Butte's incredible run to the 2A title over SWL rival Telluride, the senior midfielder was the Wolverines' lone First Team selection.

Developing and emerging match by match as a team leader for 2019, sophomore defender Braden Thayer represented Bayfield (2-13-0 overall) on the Second Team.

Finishing 15-1-2, Crested Butte - seeded #1 in the Class 2A State Tournament's opening Round-of-12 - followed a first-round 'bye' with a 5-2 quarterfinals win over #8 Fort Collins Heritage Christian, a 2-1 win in the semis over #4 Denver Christian, and ultimately a 1-0 triumph over #6 Telluride (12-6-1) in Commerce City inside Dick's Sporting Goods Park this past Saturday, Nov. 10.

Sophomore Gabi Marmolejo netted the overtime winner for the Titans, making All-SWL First Team senior Slater Weil the winning goalkeeper in CHSAA's first-ever '2A' grand finale. Seniors Tommy Linehan and Zane Reda were also First Team picks, though Marmolejo was not.

Telluride's wild run to the State Championship match included a first-round rout of Colorado Springs' Thomas MacLaren School, seeded 11th, then a double-OT win over Lafayette-based #3 Dawson School, and a 3-2 OT win in the semis over 2-seed Colorado Springs Fountain Valley.

Miner juniors Jonah Jodlowski and Matheau Richard were voted First Team All-League, while senior Will Jansen and junior goalie Tommy Wells earned Second Team nods along with Crested Butte senior Owen Berv and junior Kye Matlock.

Also qualifying for the 2A State Tournament was Ridgway (9-6-1), led by First Team All-SWL honorees Robert Becerra and Collin Kendall, both juniors. Seniors Ty Kraft and Owen Juell received Second Team status as the Demons, seeded seventh, defeated #10 Rye in the Round-of-12 before losing 2-0 to FVHS in the quarters.

Seniors Jose Mateo-Andres and Darrin Rodriguez represented AHS (7-8-1) on the First Team, while senior Miguel Salmon and junior Samuel Clark were named Second Team. Montezuma-Cortez (6-8-1) landed junior Alden Adams on the First Team and sophomore Rodrigo Marquez on the Second, while senior Paul Farrah represented Pagosa Springs (1-13-0) on the Second Team.
