U.S. Highway 160 closed Tuesday in two spots near Bayfield

CDOT suggests drivers take alternate routes

U.S. Highway 160 reopened between Gem Village and Bayfield as of 12:40 p.m., but remained closed about 5 miles east of town because of a two-vehicle crash.

Colorado State Patrol Capt. Adrian Driscoll said Highway 160, about 5 miles west of Bayfield, will experience closures after a semi truck and van collided at mile post 109 at around 12:10 p.m.

Driscoll said the crash involved serious injuries, but he did not have further information. He said emergency personnel and a tow truck are en route, and the highway will be closed off and on.

Lisa Schwantes, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said Highway 550 between Gem Village and Bayfield closed Tuesday morning as crews worked to recover a crashed semi truck that went off the roadway Sunday.

Schwantes said drivers were encouraged to avoid the area or use alternate routes as directed by traffic-control personnel on scene. She said CDOT crews are attempting to open one lane to alternating traffic.

The road was reopened around 12:40 p.m.
