Thanks to Bill Roberts and Ballantines

Deep thanks to Bill Roberts for his many incisive columns and editorials over his time at The Durango Herald.

Having lived in four other states and experienced weak, unoriginal, worthless writing passing muster, and where the “if it bleeds, it leads” school of journalism was the unfortunate norm, it is indisputable that writers of Bill Roberts’ caliber and the other editorial and staff writers at the Herald are true journalists.

They care about the facts and getting them straight. They care about community events and activities and needs and often write about difficult subjects, such as our high rate of suicide, because they know that to effect change takes courage and telling the truth.

Bill Roberts exemplifies this attribute of integrity and adhering to the highest standards of journalism, rather than the junk being peddled (literally) as news.

And as Mr. Roberts notes in his final column, the magnanimity of the entire Ballantine family over the past 50 years cannot be overstated – although one would never know of their generous nature or support from speaking with them.

In an age of excess and self-promotion, they instead promote good, essential causes quietly and without a desire for stage or spotlight.

Enjoy your next stage, Bill, and stay steady as she goes. Herald folks: You too.
