Former Fort Lewis College quarterback Tim Jenkins’ career is taking a turn north – north of the border.
Jenkins signed a deal this week to join the practice roster of the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
The former FLC standout spent the summer in training camp with the St. Louis Rams and appeared in one preseason game – against the Denver Broncos – before being cut.
CFL teams can expand their practice rosters to 14 people in the month of October in order to evaluate players let go by NFL teams and potentially add them to their rosters. Jenkins will be one of the players evaluated by Calgary and also will get a chance to get a feel for the Canadian game, which is similar but not entirely the same thing American football fans are accustomed to, including the use of just three downs and a larger field.
The CFL season typically begins in late June and culminates with the Grey Cup in late November. If Jenkins were to make an impression, he could end up in training camp next spring.
At FLC, Jenkins accumulated 8,857 passing yards, threw for 47 touchdowns and ran for 13 more scores in 34 career games. He was a second-team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection in 2010.
