Rescuers aiding injured hunter

Man cut his leg while cleaning elk on Missionary Ridge

Rescue workers were en route to meet an injured hunter Thursday night near Lemon Reservoir, northeast of Durango.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, suffered a cut to his leg, said Butch Knowlton, director of La Plata County Search and Rescue.

The injury occurred after someone in the group shot an elk and the man was helping clean the kill, Knowlton said.

The man’s name and hometown were not immediately known.

“I would say by the area code on his phone he is not from here,” Knowlton said.

The man was atop Missionary Ridge near the headwaters of True Creek, east of Lemon Reservoir.

Rescue workers, who were in contact with the man and his friends, were trying to guide them to a location where they could meet him with a four-wheeler and carry him out of the wilderness, Knowlton said.

Rescuers expected to have the man out of the woods sometime Thursday night.

“They are making their way down a maze of logging roads to where this individual is,” Knowlton said about 5 p.m.

The rescue team consisted of a Sheriff’s Office deputy and six search-and-rescue members, he said.
