Durango places 5 in Pagosa

Bayfield’s Nava beats Lavengood for a tourney title at 120 pounds

Durango High School placed five wrestlers at the Rocky Mountain Invitational on Saturday in Pagosa Springs: Dillon Anthony, Patrick Cunnion, Henry Dorr, Hunter Hall and Matthew Lavengood.

Cunnion and Lavengood both finished runner-up at 182 and 120 pounds, respectively.

Anthony finished fourth at 152 pounds, and Dorr (145) and Hall (126) both finished fifth at the 16-team tournament.

“We wrestled really well coming out of winter break,” said DHS first-year head coach John Gurule, whose Demons’ last match was Dec. 20-21 at the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction.

DHS next will host Montezuma-Cortez at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Bayfield High School

After the Wolverines’ 65-6 loss to Monte Vista on Thursday at home, the Bayfield High School wrestling team had a lot to prove at the Rocky Mountain Invitational on Saturday in Pagosa Springs.

Ryan Nava got the message.

Bayfield’s 120-pounder went 4-0 at the 16-team meet and beat Lavengood of DHS 11-8 in the tournament championship match.

“He really, really wrestled well (Saturday),” said BHS head coach Todd McMenimen, who credited Nava’s conditioning for the victory.

“He just outworked him.”

Gurule chalked up Lavengood’s loss to technique.

“We’ll correct those falls this week,” Gurule said. “We’ll get back in the wrestling room, back to basics.”

For BHS: Cody Speece finished 3-2 at 113 pounds; Gus Roberts finished 2-3 at 138 pounds; both Blaine Barnes (182) and Taylor Winch (132) finished 0-2.

“We rebounded pretty well from our last outing against Monte Vista,” McMenimen said. “We didn’t show up with a lot of fire” Thursday night against Monte Vista.

Saturday in Pagosa Springs, “we got after it,” he said.

“All in all, it was a successful day,” McMenimen said.
