75 years ago: “Sheep men are beginning to move their flocks southward from the mountains north of Durango. Of a total of 30,000 head in the mountains, 15,000 will arrive within the next week.”
50 years ago: “La Plata County welfare will continue with donated food (surplus commodities) and not participate in the new federal food stamp plan. The state agency said a county must elect whether to participate in the federal donated food program or the food stamp program, or whether to remain out of both. The plan, recently passed by Congress and signed by the President, would allow counties to furnish food stamps to welfare recipients and then these stamps could be used to obtain certain foods without charge.”
25 years ago: The Gaslight Twin, 102 5th St., was showing “Black Rain” starring Michael Douglas. The billing read: “An American cop in Japan. Their country. Their laws. Their game. His rules.”
