After three consecutive games and 330 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks finally scored a goal.
And that was all they needed for a 1-0 victory against Colorado Christian on Friday at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood.
The victory was their fifth consecutive shutout and the Skyhawks’ sixth overall.
“We continue to be dangerous, get shots on goal and get into the box,” FLC head coach Jimmy Hall said in a telephone message to The Durango Herald.
Courtney Riley was fouled in the box, and FLC was rewarded a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the match.
“We deservedly got a PK,” Hall said.
Jessica Singleton finished it for the Skyhawks’ first goal in 361 minutes, dating back to their 1-0 shutout victory against New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 21 in Las Vegas, N.M.
“It was a great finish,” Hall said. “And it was a great confidence-builder.”
FLC outshot the Cougars 10-4, 7-3 on shots on goal, and outcornered them 8-2.
Caitlyn Espinosa, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, made three more saves for her fifth consecutive shutout and 18th in two seasons as the Skyhawks’ starter.
FLC (3-3-4, 2-1-3 RMAC) is idle for a week until it will play UC-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in Colorado Springs.
