Daniel Russell wins 2nd annual Durango Voice

Yearly event becoming a Durango staple

Bayfield resident Daniel Russell won the second annual Durango Voice on Saturday at the Henry Strater Theatre.

“I’ve just been really surprised with all the support,” said Russell. “Durango does a good job of supporting its local musicians.”

On Saturday, 13 finalists competed in a singing contest similar to the television show “The Voice.” Elaine Chick, producer of Durango Voice, said the show was sold out as the yearly event becomes a Durango staple.

“It’s really turning into a competition to keep your eye on,” Chick said.

Russell, 38, is a native of Canton, Ohio, but moved to La Plata County in 2002 with his wife, Lynnette. He started singing when he was 5 years old, mostly in church.

“I haven’t done much in the way of professional,” Russell said. “I did go to Nashville and record original music about 8 years ago, but it’s tough to get a foothold. Now I just use music for fun.”

Russell sings weekly at Grace Church in Durango. He sang John Mayer’s “Dreaming With A Broken Heart” on Saturday, and as a result of winning, will play a few sets around town, to be determined.

The first runner up was Sophie Maja Hughes, and the second runner up was CV Wells. The event is a fundraiser for Manna.
