And the West is History

100 years ago: “A large attendance graced the annual firemen’s ball held at the Red Men Hall. The fire boys are to be congratulated on having a most successful and enjoyable affair.”

75 years ago: “Among those who are enjoying the pleasures of new sights during these always rather dull days that link the last of winter and the first of spring, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Walton are visiting New Mexico, Kansas and Missouri.”

50 years ago: “The adventures on a two-week pack trip through the high country of the Rio Grande and San Juan Wilderness areas are described by Charles Harper in a story and paintings in the March issue of the Ford Times magazine. Harper relates the experiences he and 19 other ‘dudes’ had on the ‘unforgettable trip,’ one of eight offered under the Wilderness Society’s ‘A Way to the Wilderness’ program.”

25 years ago: “Northwest Pipeline Corp. has approved construction of a new line from its Ignacio gas processing plant on Florida Meas to Blanco, New Mexico. The line, an extension of the company’s main line from the Northwest, will increase the company’s capacity for moving natural gas out of the country by 300 million cubic feet per day and provide Northwest with an additional connection to the El Paso Natural Gas Co. line south. That will help alleviate a crowded line at the Ignacio plant that has prevented companies from selling some of the gas produced in La Plata County.”
