100 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Sunnyside Notes. “The Christmas exercises at the school house Christmas Eve were a complete success. The children did fine and the teacher, Miss Olive Frazier, is to be given much credit for her good management.”
75 years ago: “Stores in Durango will on the whole close early Saturday evening, as per an agreement made at the December meeting of the Round Table.” Department, hardware, furniture and jewelry stores will close at 6 p.m. and grocery stores will remain open until 7 p.m.
50 years ago: BAYFIELD – “Two 15-year-old boys, one armed with a 38 caliber pistol and the other with a 30-30 rifle, were picked up by State Patrolmen Norven Bewley three miles east of Bayfield on U.S. 160. The two runaways from Tucson, Ariz., were brought in and confined to the county jail pending further action.”
25 years ago: “The Tipsy Taxi Service, sponsored by the Durango chapter of the Colorado-Wyoming Restaurant Association, will be picking up customers on New Year’s Eve. Durango Transportation Inc. provides the rides. The rides are free for patrons of downtown bars, but has a restriction – only a bar employee or a law-enforcement officer is allowed to initiate the service.”
